Across the Sea

I do not ask to see the distant shore,
Soft waves and far green hills,
Ever-present dawn upon the sky
And hearts untroubled in every field.
No, though I long and wish to see
To my short sight is granted barest ken,
Enough, a hint to last the night;
Sustain in me that vision near
So I can take one more step.
I do not ask to see the distant shore,
Though I tell its tales and paint the colors –
Green and gold upon a snow-white sky –
My heart can wait a few more beats,
Until I then receive what is to come
And set one foot upon the road that goes.
